The Ceramics Cargo of the Mid-14th Century Temasek Wreck

An archaeological excavation carried out intermittently from 2016 to 2019 in Singapore waters resulted in the recovery of approximately 3.5 tonnes of ceramic shards along with several intact or nearly intact pieces. While none of the ship’s hull has survived, circumstantial evidence suggests that she was a Chinese junk voyaging from Quanzhou to the thriving 14th century Singapore entrepot, Temasek.

Most striking is the quantity of blue-and-white porcelain from Jingdezhen, which exceeds that of any other documented shipwreck despite accounting for less than 4% of the total recovered ceramic cargo. Some shapes and motifs are particularly rare, and of the highest quality.

Also from Jingdezhen are many qingbai wares, with some displaying the characters shu fu, the esteemed mark of the ‘Privy Council’. A wide variety of Longquan celadon presents a range of decorative techniques, and signs of evolution from early Yuan. Stoneware storage jars and small-mouth jars from Cizao probably served as containers for organic cargo. Dehua whitewares and likely Fujian greenwares round out the cargo, albeit in smaller quantities.

The Temasek Wreck assemblage is both locally unprecedented and globally important in terms of Yuan dynasty ceramic production and export. This tightly dated assemblage may also serve as a reference collection for comparative studies of less provenanced finds.
